Air Madrid to Fly to Costa Rica, too

Air Madrid, Spain’s newest airline that took off for the first time ever last weekend with a sellout flight, will also make trips to Costa Rica with a couple of Spain-bound weekly flights beginning on June 3, thus enhancing the Central American country’s connection with Europe.

The Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) informed negotiations for that deal came to a successful close last January. The air carrier will use 300-seat Airbus aircraft for this particular service.

Costa Rica’s Tourism Minister Rodrigo Castro said additional negotiations with Spanish airlines Air Europa and Iberia are underway. Iberia is already covering routes to the country and execs hope to go adding a number of nonstop flights in a piecemeal fashion.

International flights to Costa Rica have been on the rise since President Abel Pacheco came to office two years ago, jumping from 232 flights in April 2002 to 333 this time around. The upturn is owed in part to the arrival of seven more airlines to the country.

The new air carriers are Air Canada, BIWI West Indies, West Caribbean Airways, Condor (Germany), Air Madrid (Spain), and US Airways and American West from the United States.
