Air Jamaica to Stop Flying to Bonaire

In another sign of Air Jamaica´s financial woes, the airline has informed that it would suspend all service to Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, effective August 28, as part of its corporate restructuring program.

According to a statement, the suspension of Air Jamaica´s Bonaire service would be carried out in two phases. In phase one, JM flights 66/67 operating Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday would be suspended as of June 27 and in phase two, all JM service to and from Bonaire would be suspended on August 28, 2005.

The statement noted that Air Jamaica customer service representatives are contacting passengers holding reservations to and from Bonaire during the affected periods to accommodate their air travel needs.

Air Jamaica´s Bonaire service began in June 1999. The carrier, however, will continue to serve the Netherlands Antilles with service to Curacao.

Launched in December 2004, Air Jamaica´s restructuring program is designed to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs to sustain viability in the face of record-high fuel prices and increased competition.

Flights to Antigua and Barbuda and later St. Lucia were also suspended as part of the airline´s restructuring effort.
