Air Canada Tire Ruptures on Takeoff, Three Injured
Air Canada flight 8481, with 75 aboard, blew a tire as it was taking off from Calgary, Alberta en route to Grande Prairie, according to CTV News Edmonton. High winds prevented a turnaround, so the Dash 8-400 had to make an emergency landing in Edmonton, Alberta.
Amateur video showed the plane trailing a shower of sparks before it came to rest on its side. Three people received minor injuries in the ordeal, and have left the hospital after treatment. According to a witness who did not wish to be identified, they thought the plane was "going to blow up because of all the sparks."
Globalnews reported the experience of a local radio station employee who narrowly missed getting hit by the plane’s propeller as it slammed through the aircraft. “the whole inside wall of the plane blew out so [my friend] had fiberglass and everything all embedded in her skin.”
One runway was temporarily closed, but there were no flight delays.
