The beach destination of Acapulco, once a booming honeymoon spot, is experiencing a renaissance like no other, led by private investments, new hotel openings, spas, restaurants, theaters and exhibit halls that have enhanced its offerings of luxury accommodations and attractions.

The unveiling of the “new” Acapulco has been up until now a well-kept secret. And, according to tourism officials and an onslaught of young, chic visitors, Acapulco will soon regain the lead as Mexico’s hottest getaway, mirroring global destinations such as Miami’s South Beach and Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro.

“It is essential to the destination that we embrace these developments and enhancements, but also remain committed to preserving our traditions and authenticity that led us into the tourism spotlight years ago,” said Mary Bertha Medina, president of Acapulco Convention and Visitors Bureau & Acapulco Hotel Association in a written release.
