By Kerry Medina

The Acapulco Destination Marketing Office and the Secretary of Tourism for the State of Guerrero reported that that the city of Acapulco and the State of Guerrero welcomed over 1 million tourists during the summer months, resulting in an economic impact of over $283 million.

In an effort to continually increase the number of tourists visiting Guerrero, the Office of the Secretary of Tourism for Guerrero (SEFOTUR) has announced the development of a plan to revitalize the port city of Acapulco, focusing on investment in infrastructure by the state and federal governments, promotion of tourist attractions and new entertainment options for visitors, and development of hotels and resorts through private investment.

Ángel Aguirre Rivero, governor of Guerrero, recently announced the investment of $202 million in infrastructure in Acapulco. The investment will be used to build the Avenida Escénica Alterna and the Macrotúnel, both designed to connect the Traditional Zone with the exclusive Diamond Zone. The State of Guerrero also received $20 million from the federal government as part of the Coordination and Reallocation of Resources Agreement of 2011.
