50 Tons of Dead Fish Floating in Popular Mexican Lake Prompts Environmental Alert

A West Mexican lake in Mexican town Tlajomulco de Zúñiga in the Mexico’s Jalisco state was spotted with hundreds and thousands of dead fish floating on its surface. The reason for the calamity has not yet been fully identified, but pollution is definitely one of the root causes.

A number of factories and farms are situated around the lake where poisonous waste is constantly allowed to flow out. There is a tequila distillery, which locals feel could be largely responsible for death of the fish.

Some feel that fertilizers from nearby farms may have flowed into the water accompanied with heavy rains that happened a few days ago. This may have caused eutrophication where fertilizers helped in the growth of algae, decreasing the oxygen level in the lake.

This is not the first time that such an incident has taken effect. It has been happening frequently and little has been done to improve the water quality.

Experts feel that since residents are drawing more water from the lake it is becoming shallow resulting in a  decrease of the oxygen level and  fish are dying of suffocation said Manuel Guzman Arroyo, director of the University of Guadalajara’s Fresh Water Institute.

Since the lagoon is a popular tourist spot in Mexico an environmental alert has been issued.

People need to act with more responsibility to preserve the ecology or compromises with environmental safety will only lead to greater hazards.
